The lost city of Atlantis, the underwater kingdom, is about to start a war with the surface world thanks to King Orm, its power hungry ruler. Standing in the way of his dramatic plan is Aquaman, the true heir and his half-human, half-Atlantean older brother. In order to stop Orm, Aquaman but find the Trident of Atlan and become the true protector of the deep.
Aquaman follows the story of Arthur Curry after his events with the Justice League. Needless to say, after Justice League, DC needed a win in order to keep up with the superhero film market. Following the success of Wonder Woman, I was hoping that Aquaman would follow suit… believe me, it sure did!
The best thing that DC did with this is cast Jason Mamoa. He is an excellent example of why not always sticking to the original characters race and style is so important! The finesse and sheer badass-ness that he brings to the character has transformed a once joke (thinking of Big Bang Theory here), into someone who deserves to be taken seriously without all the dark and angst that Batman has brought.
There are weird bad guys, dead mum’s, muscles, a ton of explosions and little love interest. On the surface, Aquaman looks like every other superhero movie. But on this occasion, it’s also an exciting, lighthearted and genuinely entertaining film that promises to keep you invested all the way through.
If you’re at a loss of what to see before Christmas? Aquaman is a solid shout for a good watch!
